Artist spotlight:

Josefina Aguilar

Josefina Aguilar (b. 1945) is a renowned Mexican folk artist from Ocotlán de Morelos, Oaxaca. A member of the Aguilar family of ceramicists, she is best known for her small clay figurines called muñecas (dolls), an art form she learned from her mother. Collectors of her work include Nelson Rockefeller, and most major museums of Mexican folk art. She became blind in 2014 and now sculpts by touch alone.

Aguilar's sisters Guillermina, Irene, and Concepción are also accomplished sculptors. Following in the sisters' footsteps, many of Aguilar's children also work in clay.

This remarkable collection includes several of Aguilar's larger pieces, which are quite rare.

 Pastorela masks depicting diablos are used in religious dances and plays performed in February during the advent season. The plays represent the struggle of good vs. evil, and date back centuries.

Tree of Life

The "arbol de la vida" or "Tree of Life" is a traditional Mexican pottery style endemic to central Mexico. Originally the sculptures depicted the Biblical story of creation, and were used as a didactic aid for Spanish colonizers teaching Christianity.

However, modern Trees of Life take on an endless variety of styles, often departing from religious themes. A traditional gift for newlyweds as a symbol of fertility and abundance, today they are iconic Mexican decorations.
